How To Choose a Blog Topic
If you’re anything like me, you probably have a list of blog ideas that keeps growing every time you open your Notes app.
Travel. Personal finance. Healthy recipes. Maybe a little skincare. Oh, and productivity … because you’ve been meaning to get more organized anyway.
When I first started blogging, I wanted to write about everything. It felt exciting. More topics meant more content, more readers, more money, right?
WRONG!
That approach got me nowhere fast. A blog about everything is really a blog about nothing. Readers couldn’t figure out what my blog was actually for, and honestly, neither could I. It wasn’t until I got focused that things started to click, and that’s when blogging actually started making money.
So if you’re sitting there with five solid ideas and no idea which one to pick, you’re in the right place. By the end of this post you’ll have a clear direction and be ready to move on to the next step to starting your blog!
What Even Is a Niche?
Let’s start here because this word gets thrown around a lot and honestly it sounds more complicated than it is.
Your niche is just your topic. That’s it.
Think about it this way, when someone asks what your blog is about, your niche is your answer. The more specific that answer is, the better your blog will do.
Here’s a simple way to think about it.
- Fitness is a topic. Yoga for moms is a niche.
- Personal finance is a topic. Budgeting for college students is a niche.
See the difference?
One talks to everyone. The other talks to someone specific, and that person feels like your blog was written just for them. That’s exactly what you want.
Questions to Help You Pick Your Niche
Ask yourself these three questions to help you pick your niche and see what comes up.
1. What could you talk about without getting bored?
Blogging is a long game. You’re going to write about this topic a lot! So, it has to be something you actually enjoy.
Ask yourself…
- What do people come to you for advice about?
- What do you find yourself Googling at 11pm?
- What could you talk about with a friend for an hour without even looking at your phone?
That’s your starting point.
2. Would someone else actually find this helpful?
You just need to know a little more than the person you’re writing for, or genuinely enjoy the topic enough to keep learning and sharing as you go.
Think about who you’re writing for.
Is there someone out there who would read this, learn something, and come back for more?
If yes, you have something worth building.
3. Can this topic make money someday?
Some niches are just easier to monetize than others. Food, finance, parenting, health, lifestyle, these all have products, brands, and audiences built around them already.
You don’t need to figure out your whole money strategy today. But it’s worth asking:
- Are there products I could recommend in this space?
- Are there brands here?
- Would someone pay for help with this?
- Do you have a problem you could solve?
If yes, you’re in good shape.
You don’t need all three to be a perfect yes.
But if one idea keeps checking all the boxes, that’s your niche.
Still Stuck Between Two or Three Ideas?
If you are stuck between multiple ideas, this is so normal.
I promise you are not the only one sitting there going back and forth between two ideas that both feel right.
Ask yourself these questions and see which idea wins.
- Which one would you Google first on a random Tuesday night?
- Which one would you bring up in conversation without anyone even asking?
- Which one are you already doing in real life, even just a little bit?
That last one is a big one.
If you’re already living it, you already have content. You already have a perspective. You’re basically ahead of the game before you even write your first post.
And if you’re still genuinely torn, pick the one that excites you more. Not the one that sounds smarter or more profitable on paper. The one that actually lights you up a little when you think about it.
You can always evolve. Plenty of bloggers have shifted their niche as they grew. But you can’t evolve a blog you never started.
Just Pick One
Seriously. Pick one and go with it.
Your niche is just a starting point! The bloggers who make it are not the ones who picked the perfect niche on day one, they’re the ones who picked something and kept going.
So write down your top ideas right now. Circle the one that checks the most boxes. And let’s move on to the next step together.
